It is a fisherman's story that is not a fairy tale. After a 25-minute struggle, British fisherman Andy Hackett caught a huge carp nicknamed "Carrot" weighing 30 kilograms. According to Blue Water Lakes, a family-run fishing company in France's Champagne region, the giant fish is believed to be the second-largest of its kind ever caught. With its bright orange color, this giant goldfish is easy to spot as it swims beneath the surface of the water. However, the carrot proved a challenge. "With normal fish it's hard to tell if they're just below the surface, but the carrot is obviously bright orange so you can't lose sight of it," Hackett told the BBC. "It's a highly sought-after fish, but few people have caught it. He's pretty elusive. "Blue Water Lakes offers anglers a private spot to try and catch one of the many fish that weigh in excess of 22.7 pounds, with some in excess of 40 pounds. “About 20 years ago we placed carrots here as something different to take away for our customers. It has grown and expanded since then, but it is not caught very often," Fisheries Director Jason Cowler told the Daily Mail. "Not the largest sea creature, but by far the most notable."
After Hackett retrieved and weighed Carrot, he was released back into the lake. Since the company has no restrictions, the fishermen never land their fish. The Blue Water team also stressed on their Facebook page that any injuries to the fish are treated before they are released back into the water. The company has seen the carrot grow, which was caught by fishermen nine times last season. After first breaking the record of 27 kilograms in February, the carp floated freely for nine months until Hackett caught it again. A ever-growing goldfish The average native goldfish weighs less than a pound, but this species can grow much larger under various circumstances. Given enough space, the right food and water conditions, carp species including goldfish and koi have tremendous growth potential, which explains the carrot's impressive size. Often the largest goldfish found are ex-pets that were released into the wild by their owners. Abandoned animals can adversely affect the delicate balance of the natural environment. "In fact, there are several species of goldfish-like carp in Europe and Asia that grow very large - some of them can weigh up to 200 kilograms.
