Zebra oto
Catching a Zebra Oto (Zebra Otocinclus), a popular species of freshwater algae-eating catfish, is usually necessary when you need to transfer it between aquariums or perform tank maintenance. Since they are small, fast, and can stress easily, you must handle them carefully. Here’s how you can catch a Zebra Oto safely:
1. Prepare a Soft Mesh Net
- Use a fine, soft mesh net that won’t harm the delicate fins or skin of the fish. Make sure the net is large enough to comfortably fit the Zebra Oto without bending it.
2. Dim the Lights
- Lower the lighting in the tank before attempting to catch the fish. Dim lights reduce stress for the fish and make them less active, giving you a better chance to catch them calmly.
3. Remove Tank Decorations (Optional)
- Zebra Otos tend to hide in decorations, plants, or behind rocks. Removing some of these obstacles can make it easier to catch them. Be careful when removing decorations to avoid scaring or harming the fish.
4. Use a Slow and Calm Approach
- Zebra Otos are quick swimmers and can dart away easily. Slowly approach them with the net, and don’t chase them aggressively, as this can cause stress or injury. Move the net in a way that corners the fish gently.
5. Guide the Fish Toward the Net
- Rather than trying to scoop the Zebra Oto directly, guide it towards the net using the side of the tank or your hand. You can use a second net to coax it toward the one you plan to catch it with.
6. Take Your Time
- Patience is key. If you find the fish too elusive, give them a moment to calm down before trying again. Trying to catch them quickly might stress them further, leading to injury.
7. Transfer Carefully
- Once caught, gently lift the fish out of the water and transfer it immediately to the new tank or container. Make sure the water in the transfer container matches the water parameters (temperature, pH) of the original tank to reduce stress.
8. Alternative Method: Bottle Trap
- If the fish are proving too difficult to catch with a net, you can use a bottle trap. Cut the top off a plastic bottle, invert it, and place some food inside. The Zebra Oto will swim in for the food, and you can easily remove the bottle from the tank.
Tips:
- Always check the condition of the fish after catching them, ensuring no injuries or excessive stress are evident.
- Avoid touching the fish with your hands, as their slimy coating can be disturbed, making them more prone to disease.
This method should help you catch your Zebra Oto safely while minimizing stress to the fish.
